WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported a nationwide recall Thursday of French Style Green Beans sold under various brand names.

Lakeside Foods Inc. of Manitowoc, Wis., initiated the voluntary recall of 15,000 cases of 14.5-ounce cans of the beans after determining some cans might have been underprocessed and some might have leaked, posing the risk of botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.

The recalled product has can codes EAA5247, EAA5257, EAA267, EAA5277, EAB5247, EAB5257, ECA5207, ECA5217, ECA5227, ECA5297, ECB5207, ECAB5217, ECB5227 and ECB5307.

"Then a sentimental passion of a vegetable fashion
Must excite your languid spleen,
An attachment a la Plato for a bashful young potato
Or a not-too-French French bean..."
- G&S, in "Patience"

Fortunately, I do not care much for French style beans, so my "languid spleen" is unlikely to be harmed by eating them... though who knows what I've got in my hurricane stock; I tend to grab cans off the grocer's shelves without a lot of thought. But where will it end? Has this gone on always, or is it a consequence of a food inspection system broken recently?

And then the FDA thinks about closing 7 of its 13 offices around the country:
Lawmakers also criticized the Food and Drug Administration's plan to close half of its laboratories. They called that idea misguided and questioned whether it would save money and enhance the agency's ability to target unsafe food, as FDA commissioner Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach said it would.

"FDA's ill-conceived decision to close seven of its 13 laboratories likely would expose American consumers to even more danger from unsafe foods, particularly imports," said Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., at a hearing of a House Committee on Energy and Commerce subcommittee.
