Imagine a government that forcibly breaks up 18,000 marriages.

We, the undersigned, share President Barack Obama's view that "for too long, issues of LGBT rights have been exploited by those seeking to divide us. It's time to move beyond polarization and live up to our founding promise of equality by treating all our citizens with dignity and respect."

Yet, on December 19, 2008, Ken Starr and the Prop 8 Legal Defense Fund filed legal briefs defending the constitutionality of Prop 8 and seeking to nullify the 18,000 same-sex marriages conducted between May and November of 2008.

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in this case on March 5, 2009, with a decision expected within the next 90 days. We, the undersigned, ask that the Court invalidate Prop 8 and recognize the marriage rights of these 18,000 couples -- and all loving, committed couples in California -- under our state's constitution.

As Americans who believe in the rule of law and fundamental civil rights, we know that Ken Starr and the Prop 8 Legal Defense Fund's shameful attempt to nullify these unions will not be vindicated in the eyes of history. We know that, ultimately, love will prevail, no matter how hard they try to fight it.

I will truly respect our president when he stands up against Prop h8. I am not talking about a half-ass remark saying he understands, but a forceful action that says this country will not longer accept this intolerance. I highly doubt the Supreme Court is going to take a stand. It is a shame.

Amazing how many people want to go back to the era of deeply closeted gay, the shamed adulteress, the shunned bastard children. Our California court better realize that most of its electorate has grown up, out, and moved on from this backward idiocy.

Start here you guys: Every person is equal to every other person. Take it from there.

I happen to be straight; I was born that way. My LGBT friends assure me that their orientation, like mine, is innate. Giving me the right to marry and depriving them of that same right is offensive beyond words.

It is also a constitutional matter. As a matter of equality... simple human equality... the law should make no distinction between a gay marriage and a straight one. A law which differentiates in that way denies gays "the equal protection of the laws" (Amendment XIV) ... and is therefore flat-out unconstitutional under the federal Constitution, whether or not it complies with California's. Prop. h8 must be invalidated.

As a mom, I can't help but shudder at the concept of turning one's back on a gay child. Can you imagine the pain and damage done to everyone involved?

simple human equality It's as fundamental as that.
