Hamsters!

Photobucket

An alternate energy source!:
Hamsters in jackets harnessed for energy. Scientists have managed to harness the energy-producing power of hamsters by fitting them with tiny detector jackets.
Why aren't they just running off of the wheel? That thing makes a huge racket all night and could generate enough electricity for a small city.

Hamsters or humans, if their motion is to produce energy, they must move. If they are to move, they must be fed. Feeding requires food; human food generally requires agriculture; agriculture requires energy...

I am reminded of the enthusiasm for biofuels, some of which are alleged to require more fuel to raise the crop than they actually produce at the end of the process.

But at least for the hamsters here, there is such thing as a free lunch. :p

My mother-in-law told a story of going down to the pig farm to find silverware. Really.

The city would take the food-only garbage to feed the pigs. People would often drop their utensils into the trash along with the plate scrapings and the pigs would eat around them.

That's before the days of pork that could be cooked on the pink side, of course.

Long-winded story to come back to the fact that I agree with you. Hamsters could actually have a free meals from just our plate scrapings and we could power our cars, houses, small industrial units by their nocturnal activities.

(We had four at one time, each to its own cage. The nightly wheel squeaks rattled the windows...)

And as a bonus, if you accidentally put the male hamster back with the female hamster within weeks you get eight more hamsters.....it's self-perpetuating!
