Fear the unhinging!

Glenn Greenwald:

Over at National Review, Jonah Goldberg has a "theory" about what might help Obama win in the general election. After noting that Obama will be "the first serious mainstream black contender for the White House," Goldberg warns (emphasis added):

I think it's worth imagining a certain scenario. Imagine the Democrats do rally around Obama. Imagine the media invests as heavily in him as I think we all know they will if he's the nominee -- and then imagine he loses. I seriously think certain segments of American political life will become completely unhinged. I can imagine the fear of this social unraveling actually aiding Obama enormously in 2008.
I wonder: in Jonah Goldberg's "imagination," which (ahem) "certain segments" of the American population exactly will "become completely unhinged" if Obama loses and thereby spawn "social unraveling"? And who are the people who are going so deeply to fear this "social unraveling" that they vote for Obama just in order to keep those "certain segments" in line and well-behaved?
Oh... I don't know. Fear of social unraveling? What does a Republican do when meeting up with scary looking black man?

Fall on his knees waving a twenty dollar bill and offer to blow him?

I guess we've come to the bottom of the deck and all the Republican party can do is play the race card.

Its sad to watch them flail when encountering the Obama campaign.

So much to pick on with Obama, but he's doing a good job playing like a repubican (supporting first strike Bush doctrine) that they don't have any liberal attacks to use -- so they fear the black man.

At the same time, Clinton wants to control who leads Pakistan. Sheesh, don't these people get while the getting is good?

it is the OJ defense ---- you know your guy is guilty so play the race card.

they know that any of their candidates are losers -- so play the race card and SCARE the nation. except i think we are just so tired of Republican Brand, even the race card this time is a losing defense.

i hope anyway

Paul Bengala(?) was on the Stephanie Miller show this morning and was saying Obama's speaking style was poetry. Others have compared him to JFK or his brother.

I hear you about so much to pick on, map, with Obama. He does have flaws as does everyone else. But oh, can he talk!

Dcap, I wonder how much flung crap will stick on Obama and how much will fly back and splatter the Republican opponents. ALL of their candidates are wounded some way or another, and playing the race card could actually hurt them.

Here's to hoping we've matured enough to see the incoming Republican Smear Machine's shit flinging session for what it is. Desperation.
