NBC News reported the ruling as "The court said that voters made their choice..."

I'm sure Mississippi voters in the 1960s would have voted to deny blacks the vote and keep segregation (and still might today), but that doesn't make it constitutional.

Very disappointed in my home state today.

Apologies gladly accepted from all those Californians who have contributed gratuitous nonspecific defamations of Texas on my blog over the past eight or so years, especially around election times. Guess what... you aren't all personally superior beings after all!

Direct referendum is a terrible way to make laws, and a still worse way to make constitutional amendments. IMNSHO, the first thing California needs to do, even before it gets rid of Prop. H8, is to ditch that ghastly referendum procedure. Otherwise, this will happen again and again, until the right-wing nut-jobs and neighboring-state Mormons get tired of winning.

reminds me of the old Churchill comment, "Americans can always be counted on to do the right thing...after they have exhausted all other possibilities."

You'll get there eventually. Wish it was sooner, though.

Wil, you are right that such civil rights issues should not be voted on in such a manner. The idiots in my state were trying to save their marriages from a terrible threat. You'd think they'd work on divorce first.

Steve, direct referendums are absolutely moronic and are being manipulated by the rich, the religious, and the greedy for their own benefit. We'll have a referendum to annul the referendums...if the rich, religious greedy bastards don't get there first.

Also, I apologize for all the stupid cracks I have made about Texas these last eight years. You didn't ask for Georgie to come live in your state... But I still think that California's idiots are better than Texas' idiots...:D!

Ali, it's like walking backwards through life... I wish we'd grow up and admit that the fake 50s icon of the perfect family is a crock.

ellroon, it's not just GWB living here. A few times I've been banned from Californian comment threads for... supporting GWB? no... for being Texan. Period. That's just plain narrow-minded, and those bloggers, not you, are the Californians I want apologies from... especially now, after Prop. H8.

Good grief. I had no idea some of us were so bigoted... well, yes I did, but I don't like seeing the proof.

I've even refrained from egging your governor on to secede from the Union, knowing it would force you to move once again....

Steve Bates said...

ellroon, Gov. Goodhair has a distressingly high support for secession, which is ironic, because most constitutional scholars I've read say that Texas is not permitted to secede, that Texas is as married to the Union as any two California girls are to each other. Oh, wait...

Nobody I personally know favors secession. That may say more about who I know than about the popularity of secession among the Texas body politic. I did suggest to Mad Kane that she write a parody musical called Country Fiddler on the Roof, with songs like Secession! and Yes, I am a rich man, but so far she has demurred.

I don't know whether I still regard myself as a Democrat, but as a Texas Democrat, I... and thousands like me... have worked our butts off to transform Texas as the opportunity has emerged. And we've had some success. E.g., the state House is now within two votes... two... of being a Democratic majority. As our population has now been majority-minority for a couple of years, I see this transformation happening within my short remaining lifetime... but nobody in the rest of the country seems to notice.

The worst of having had the Bushes move here is that people now think that's what a native Texan sounds like. Uh, no...

Bush's accent is a thing to behold. I think he's doing his best trying to disguise the fact he is a Connecticut Yankee dressed up in a cowboy suit.

But then he was always bedazzled by costumes and pretend...
