A sentence that made me recoil in horror

Glenn Beck Expresses 'Erotic' Joy From Man Cutting Trees And Hunting On Earth Day.
Apparently he got excited when a caller told him he was cutting down trees in honor of Earth Day.
It turns out that the unrelenting insanity that I had hoped Glenn Beck might put on display on Teabag Day, he saved in reserve for Earth Day! On Beck's radio show, the host talked to some forest manager, who was going to be cutting down trees for some hunter. "This is like Nirvana here," he said, "This is not only going to hack off all the environmentalists but all the PETA people as well." (Nobody give Glenn a sad by telling him that environmentalists are actually okay with cutting down trees and sustainable forest management, okay?)

Anyway, this presented Beck with a cognitive challenge. What would happen if he was forced to keep two ideas - chopping down trees and shooting deer - in his head at the same time? In short order came the answer. "I need some Barry White music!" Beck exclaimed, "This is almost full-fledged light some candles! This is eroticism!" And for a minute there, you got the feeling like an epic talk-radio jeans-creaming was about to unfold.

Glenn is nuts, as always. If a forest manager decided to take down trees, even on Earth Day, you may be reasonably confident there were reasons for doing so that environmentalists would approve of. The Forestry Committee of the local group of that major enviro org of which I was a local officer for a few years exchanges letters and phone calls constantly with nearby forest managers; nothing goes unobserved.

As for hunters, while most would not use the word "environmentalists" for themselves, they most certainly call themselves "conservationists" ... and they act like it. Send me hunters any day in preference to the Glenn Beck types; hunters generally give a damn.

In fact hunters are noticing the lack of mammals as a consequence of overbuilding and resource mining. So they are conservationists: Save the animals so we can shoot them later. I'm joking really.

The ancient way of the hunter is fast approaching its end, there are just too many people.

And Glenn Beck is just mad. Deranged. And people listen to him.

Hee. Was at an agricultural advisory committee meeting yesterday (yes my life is THAT exciting) and their board was complaining about Ducks Unlimited. Damn hunters not allowing cattle to poop in the marshes!

So yeah, hunters are generally concerned about the environment. So they can kill more stuff, sure, but it's still conservation.

"Save the animals so we can shoot them later."A perfectly fair characterization of their typical attitude. I can't judge people's motivations; it's neither my job nor my inclination. Among humans, some people hunt like cats, instinctively. Some hunt for food (my granddad was one). Some hunt for sport... weird to me, but many sport hunters I've encountered are nonetheless deeply committed to species survival, as you say, so they can kill individual animals later. It's not my place to judge motivation, as long as they behave in ways that result in conservation. Not everyone can be a sprout-eater like me. :-)

I am soooo tired of Blogger comments removing the line break after the first closed-italics tag...

...agricultural advisory committee meeting. Doesn't have to be exciting to be interesting. May your tribe prosper and increase! We unfortunately do need fewer pooping cows = fewer processing areas = fewer piles of salty manure = less methane = less chopping down of rain forests for grazing lands....

It's sad because I like to eat beef... but I've heard that ostrich meat is tasty...

I apologize in advance for Blogger, Steve. It's not been house trained very well..

And I hear you, doesn't matter how we get there, conservation is good for everything.

We do need to stop eating so much meat, though. Just ... not yet...
