NOW!

The time to act is now!

As I noted on hipparchia's thread, putting content aside for a moment, Ms. Chin's delivery will inevitably remind older people of Hitler's speaking style. IMHO it undercuts her message. Your mileage may vary.

I'm not "older people" in that sense, I guess. She does not remind me of Hitler in the slightest.

It was her passion that got to me. It would be very abrasive to have to listen long to such a rant, but it was splendid in its fervor.

Now if she could channel that passion and fervor into musical expression, it would be something else.

The 1812 Overture?

Michael, you're right: you're not "older people." If you're interested in the similarity, please watch some of Hitler's W.W. II film footage. I'm not sure you'll see the similarity; indeed, I myself would love to be able to forget it, to consign Hitler and his ilk to history's trash bin... but I'm afraid the type is still around.

ellroon, Hitler, too, had a lot of "passion" in his hate speech. For me, it holds no more appeal when the speaker is a young gender-issues activist. Hate speech is hate speech. If I feel anything similar, I am utterly determined not to make it part of my public position: hatred is always ugly, under all circumstances.

I did not hear hate, I heard anger. She did not offend me with her speech.

I'll listen again.

Did Steve watch the same video?

There's nothing hateful here that I can see. Anger? Yes.

Sigh. I give up.

Sorry about that, Steve.

I just listened again. Maybe because she's speaking English rather than Hitler's German... I hear the rhythmic speech and the hoarseness of her voice that is 'hitlerish', the furious voice that seizes the collar and shakes.

But because it is an outraged scream for tolerance and unity, using the very words often hurled in hatred at her, I am not offended. A woman pushed to the brink. I don't talk like her, I don't have her depth of anger. Her speech will not galvanize me to do anything rash. But I understand her.

In assessing Ms. Chin's speaking style, I asked people, both here and on hipparchia's thread, to put aside content for a moment and concentrate on sound. No one here... not even another musician... seems willing to do that. It's not about whether I understand her, and it's most certainly not about whether I watched the same video.

The visceral message projected by Chin's tone utterly overwhelms any purported plea for tolerance: the tone becomes the message. There may be a place for that in our dialogue, but when it happens, it needs to be acknowledged explicitly.

Steve, your musical background has made you more finely attuned to sound. (In searching for comparisons,my Hitler link does pick up a speech that sounds much like Chin's delivery.)

I acknowledge what you are saying, I just don't have the same reaction to it.

Wow.

What a total crock for ulta-left, non-thinking crap.

As you see by the discussion, some here agree with you.

But thanks for your insightful comment.
