What the hell did we do to deserve this?
If Robertson and Falwell said we deserved 9/11 because of gays, the ACLU, the liberals who demanded a secular society.... what does it mean when Robertson endorses thrice-married, pro-abortion, pro-gay, secular Giuliani?

Too bad Falwell isn't here to tell us what sin was responsible
For Hawaii's incoming troubles:
Oh well... where ever he is now, I'm sure he's having a ... blast.
Or the U.S' incoming hurricane season...HONOLULU — Hurricane Flossie was downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane Tuesday but stayed on course to brush the Big Island, where schools were closed and residents were urged to stock up on food and water.
As if the storm wasn't enough, an 5.3 magnitude earthquake jolted the Big Island of Hawaii during the night.
The eye of the storm had maximum sustained wind of 110 mph, hurricane specialists noted in downgrading the storm from the earlier Category 3. It was expected to pass less than 100 miles from the islands, lashing the shores with strong wind and up to 10 inches of rain, meteorologists said.
The National Weather Service placed the Big Island under a hurricane watch and a tropical storm warning. A flash flood watch was also issued for the island through Wednesday.
Oh well... where ever he is now, I'm sure he's having a ... blast.

Falwell arriving at the pearly gates
Uh oh, Tinky Winky....

(pic stolen from here.)
Update 5/29: We need a poem to honor this event:
Steve Bates said...
Jerry Scary
Children, see the Teletubby:
Rather stubby,
Kinda chubby.
Never snobby, never clubby.
Has a TV in its tummy:
Never crummy,
Never scummy;
Doesn't look a lot like Mummy.
Has a 'tenny on the toppy:
Though he's sloppy,
Dances choppy,
One would not mistake for Poppy.
Children, now let's look at Jerry:
Jerry's wary,
Jerry's scary;
Calls our Tinky Winky "fairy."
Doesn't like our Tinky's baggy,
Calls him "faggy,"
Calls him "draggy,"
Calls him everything but "Maggie."
Jerry's preachy on the tubey:
Hates kids who be
Just like you be;
'Specially kids who might a Jew be.
Children, do not be like Jerry:
Leery, wary,
Chary, scary.
Lovey-dovey has he nary.
Better take your cue from Tinky:
Smiley, Winky,
Kindly thinky;
Next to Tinky, Jerry's stinky!
Hate's infectious, like a scabie:
You had maybe
Better gay be
Than to hate a 'tubby baby!

Isn't it amazing that a man trying to spread the word of God
Spread something else entirely:

Molly Ivors at Whiskey Fire on Falwell:
I'm bracing myself for days of unquestioning tongue-bathing of the corpse from the mainstream press, so let me just say this before it gets started: Jerry Falwell may have single-handedly brought down the American experiment in his desire to allow religion to control the government and to make personal moral decisions the province of the law. We would not be where we are right now--mired in war and debt, with a deeply divided population and a functionally retarded president--without Falwell and his minions. There, I said it and I'm not sorry.Ripley at Zen Cabin sends him off with some choice music.
Chester at Vanity Press looks at the mess Falwell left behind:
It's difficult to be charitable when acknowledging the passing of someone whose life's work you despised. I guess all I've got to say is that I'm more concerned with the continuing effects of his efforts here on Earth than I am with the fate of his immortal soul -- because the latter is really none of my business. So yes, all in all I hope he gets some peace in death, if only because there's no point in wishing otherwise; now, let's see about unravelling his harmful legacy back down here on the material plane, yes?jj at Unrepentant Old Hippie shows where the blame for Falwell's death will fall.
jurassicpork of Welcome to Pottersville has an excellent obituary, I've stolen this quote:
How many of us can forget the ventriloquist act (with two dummies instead of an actual human in the act) on The 700 Club in which Falwell blamed pro-choice people, the ACLU, gays and lesbians for September 11th? There’s Falwell’s legacy in a nutshell among those of us who don’t give ourselves prostate exams with our noses. That was just one of the many, many faux pas that led to Falwell’s fall from being America’s #1 evangelist to another potbellied Christopath relegated to genteel but still-lucrative obscurity.I think jurassicpork's word Christopath describes it all.
Falwell, as with Robertson, as with Franklin Graham, as with James “Last of the Dogbeaters” Dobson, as with so many others, was all about hate. Maybe he wasn’t quite as outer fringe as Fred Phelps but at his worst he wasn’t very far from it. As far back as the height of his power in the late 80’s, he became such an embarrassment to moderate Christians and conservatives that even warhawk Barry Goldwater publicly said that he’d love to kick Falwell in the nuts.
Falwell made quite a handsome living baiting gays, lesbians, the ACLU, liberals and even Christians who didn’t come around the Baptist buffet line a second time for a heapin’ helping of salvation.
Update: Fixed spelling. Sheesh! (and again. Don't tell me about spell checker being my friend....)

Made in his own image
Falwell still sees grabbing the White House and making the United States a theocracy:
DALLAS (Reuters) - His influence may be diminished but his zeal is undaunted. Evangelist Jerry Falwell is on a mission to keep a like-minded Republican in the White House and get at least one more conservative judge on the Supreme Court.
Despite his years in the trenches of America's culture wars, Falwell -- who founded the Moral Majority political movement in 1979 and helped propel the rise of the religious right -- said a major victory in his broader crusade to restore the country's moral righteousness has so far eluded him.
With abortion still legal, prayer banned in public schools and pornography rife, he sees a long struggle ahead. For now, he is focusing on voter registration drives and rallying the faithful with his eyes on the twin prizes of the 2008 presidential election and control of the Supreme Court.
