Study: Hate of Obama fuels 755% growth in extremist groups
Unlike traditional hate groups, “Patriot” groups subscribe to a set of conspiracy theories and see the government as their primary enemy.
“Basically what ‘Patriot’ groups think is that the federal government is an evil cabal in the hands of bad people,” Potok explained. “The government is about to impose martial law on the country, very probably with the help of foreign troops, perhaps U.N. troops. They intend to confiscate all guns from Americans. Those liberty-loving Americans who resisted will be thrown into concentration camps that have secretly constructed by FEMA. And ultimately the government will force us all into a socialistic kind of one-world government, the so-called New World Order.”

'“Patriot” groups subscribe to a set of conspiracy theories'

And Southern Poverty Law Center knows, better than anyone else, how many hate groups there are and how they operate. They've also sued more of them out of existence than any other org, usually by draining their bank accounts into the pockets of individuals and families whose members have been murdered by the groups.

But the very notion of a Black man as president causes the hate groups to breed like rabbits. (I first typed "rabbis" by mistake. :) ) I do not believe racial bigotry will ever be a thing wholly of the past in America.

Oh, and as for beantown mom's post...

Somebody needs to put Rush Limbaugh out of our misery.

And the girls who persecuted her daughter? Expel the (expletive)s. Let them find another school in which to be little sociopaths. Broadcast their names far and wide, so they won't find it so easy to locate another school that will take them.

We owe the people who work at the Southern Poverty Law Center a great deal for going after these people. I would be scared shitless... (lol.. the spell checker offered hilarious variations on shitless....)

Why is bullying so primal in children? Shaming at the high school level might work, so would lawsuits towards the idiot adults, but it will happen again elsewhere.

I don't know if you can teach empathy if you don't have it to begin with....

SPLC's attorneys have all been the target of murder attempts, many (e.g., Morris Dees) more than once. The Center itself had one of its earlier offices firebombed; they easily collected donations to rebuild. It's a dangerous effort, but I'm glad somebody competent is willing to do it.

I don't know why bullying is so common. The ACLU has joined with other org's in a program called "It Gets Better," which provides videos and personal counseling to gay kids who have been outed (and are at high risk of suicide). The current prez of the ACLU, Anthony Romero, is himself gay, so he can identify.

I suppose the suggestions for "shitless" are browser-dependent; Google Chrome suggested the eminently reasonable "shirtless" and "shiftless," along with the less plausible "sightless," "spiritless" and "limitless." (Limitless???)
