A friend of a friend in Austin descends from a family so Republican it even has several members who have run for office as R's. In her younger years she never even thought of voting D. Then this stuff started happening to the remnants of her party...

I've never had the nerve (or the privacy) to discuss it with her. But I know her just barely well enough to be able to tell, from postures and facial expressions, that she is not a happy camper anymore in the GOP. It must be tough; I'm sure she gets pressure to stay, to go along to get along, etc. She doesn't deserve it, but from your post, clearly she's not the only former or nearly-former R woman out there.

Several of my acquaintances are moderate Republicans... a species that no longer roams the earth. We've been so polarized that each side is hysterically shrieking about the other and moderates and those who could negotiate are cursed and threatened. Tis the Era of Stupid and I never thought I'd see the day....
