There's something deep in that. It is the nature of Christianity that it depends on the word as surely as on the Word. Monks who have taken vows of silence can no more avoid the written word and remain among the faithful than an auto mechanic can give up his or her wrenches: words are the fundamental tools of the expression of religion, and if they are not spoken or sung, they must be written. Or printed. Or displayed on signs as at a football game!

I was in a crowd once who got to flash those cardboard signs I have no idea what we said, but we followed the directions and flipped when we were told... wasn't a religious experience though....
