Can you tell the writer's gender when you read a novel?

Sometimes.

Not a single one of the comments refers you to the Turing test :-(

I wonder if you could guess the gender of the programmer of the test, then?

Place the author, horizontal, face up, legs somewhat spread, on a bed. Slide the book, open, pages up, underneath the author's thighs. Then read the book through the opening between the author's legs.

All but the most imperceptive of readers should be able to tell...

Geez, Steve. It must take you a hell of a long time to get through a novel.
