Can we apply this to children?

I never hear "stone" as a unit of weight that I don't think of Allan Sherman's parody of "Molly Malone": "In Dublin's fair city / Where girls are so pretty / My Molly stands out 'cause she weighs 18 stone (that's about 252 pounds) ..." Etc., etc. It doesn't get more polite after that!
While it can be difficult to control the weight of one pet when you're feeding more than one, there is simply no excuse in a clear case of negligence like this. IMHO, If you're going to keep an animal as a pet, you are obliged to look after its health as best you are able.
Sympathy feeding. Freud would have had a field day.
Still, to take it to trial seems awfully extreme... but I guess it was like torturing the doggie.
