"Tesla's..."

Batteries are a mature technology, a fact that has held up advances in electric cars, practical use of home solar panels, etc., for years. But...

If Tesla has truly come out with a home battery storing 10kwh, and "[a] typical [home solar] installation might be about a 5 kWh array, or roughly 25 panels," then a single Tesla battery could store (read: time-average) a couple days worth of power use for a typical home. Which would mean people with the money to install the solar array and the battery can literally get off the grid and still have more or less steady power. (This is a drastic simplification, and does not account for living in extreme-weather areas or charging your electric car at home, but still...)

I get a chill just thinking about it. Wow! I have a feeling, if humankind survives long enough, the name "Elon Musk" will be on everyone's tongue.

... or maybe not: the Energy Information Administration says that "[i]n 2013, the average annual electricity consumption for a U.S. residential utility customer was 10,908 kilowatthours (kWh), an average of 909 kWh per month." That's about 30kwh/day. I'm not sure if that means you'd need 3 Tesla batteries to store a day's worth of power, but presumably you wouldn't need to store a full day's worth; after all, some of that time, the Sun is shining.

But how wonderful that we might have this choice... I'd make a wall of Tesla batteries if I could thumb my nose at the Koch brothers.
