This reminds me, oddly enough, of a concert probably 35 years ago in Ft. Worth at the Kimbell Museum of the group called Sour Cream, three famous Dutch recorder players (Brüggen, Boeke, van Hauwe, I think) playing 20th-century music.
As amazing as their flawless technique in the face of some exceedingly difficult music is the fact that they played the whole concert on "junk" recorders. Hohner. Adler. Gill, f'chrissake, than which there is none worse! Perhaps they had tweaked them themselves with file, rasp and emery board; "real" recorder players do that even with fine, expensive instruments. But "junk" recorders these were, nonetheless.
I think Sour Cream presented not just a concert but also an object lesson...
