Ole Phat Stu... that's because there's only one telephone in all of Middle Earth, so they worked out a ring sequence to tell who the call is for: "Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, etc."

All those hobbits look Irish to me.

(Google just demanded... and I do mean demanded... my phone number. Bastards... whatever happened to "don't be evil"? I tried various things like 000-00-0000 and 777-77-7777, all rejected. Finally I gave them a real phone number... that of my late father, who died in 1995. It's a small community; I doubt the number has been reissued.)

Google demanded? Wtf? Haven't yet been commanded to hand over a phone number.... but why? I don't need to talk to anybody at Google....

Irish? ...well... hobbits do love beer and a good song...

ellroon, that was the first time it's happened to me, and once they interjected their phone number form, they absolutely would not proceed to post my comment until I gave them a phone number of a valid shape. Well, I didn't entirely lie... I kept that phone for a while after my father's death, so I'd have it when I went to that place on weekends while executing Dad's will, and I did make and receive a few phone calls on it.

(It's the curly reddish hair that does it. I keep thinking of ST:TNG's Miles O'Brien [Colm Meaney].)

Omg, Steve! You are right.

ellroon, I remembered him as more redheaded than he looks in that photo, but the face certainly looks like the hobbits' faces.
