I haven't looked at the news in the past ten minutes... do you think we'll get our October surprise in November this year?
I am uncertain whether this represents a buildup to an actual attack, or a feint intended to scare the bejeezus out of American voters. The former would be no surprise; the Bush cabal is much better at starting wars than finishing them. The latter seems incredible to me: how would an attack on Iran, particularly now, help them to win elections?
I've read both suggestions: 1) the attack happens before the election to activate the rallying-to-the-leader effect. This seems the most moronic because of the lack of support for the Iraq debacle, but look at the bozos in charge. 2) the attack happens after the election which shifts Congress to the Democrats, and they act to get the attack in before people are sworn in in January. Although (was it Billmon?) I've see the suggestion that even though the Democrats could take both the Senate and the House, not much will be done to Bush. They will just wait him out.
I really feel the neocons want/need/have to have the bombing of Iran. I should finally read all of the PNAC to see whether they want to destablize Iran completely or just take out their nuclear capacity.
I don't think they care about what kind of fallout (pun intended) follows.
